This 1888 telegraph from Sydney is a rare find for collectors of antique correspondence. Sent by GW Griffin (Gilderoy Wells), United States Consul for New Zealand in 1882 and author of a book on the resources and commerce of the area.

“Sir Henry promises to decide your case Tuesday letter received.”

It is addressed to Hon W. G. Markham, who was heavily involved in the exportation of merino sheep to Australia. He convinced Australian wool growers that introducing American merinos into the Australia flock would increase their weight, and this was very successful.
