This is a Vintage Namibian Herero Doll, handmade by women from the Herero tribe in South West Africa, this one dating back to the 1970s.
Discovered in a storage box untouched for decades, this doll is in amazing condition. The Herero people also live in neighboring Botswana and Angola. These dolls are fashioned or dressed as the women of the tribe. A traditional style of dress that dates back to the 19th century Victorian era. This dress also resembles the dresses worn by the German colonist women and German missionaries wives back in the day, a time of struggle and oppression of the Herero people. The style of headwear is derived as a representation of the horns of their cattle, a sign of status in the community. The dress would be worn only for special occasions.

This beautiful doll measures approximately 12” inches tall. The doll is dressed in a brilliant floral dress, the traditional style outfit worn by the women of the Herero tribe. She also wears an underskirt or petticoat made of printed cotton and a yellow gingham shawl, with a matching cotton head wrap. Must not forget to mention her jewelry, drop earrings and snazzy beaded necklace.
She could be a wonderful addition to an ethnic doll collection, an African folk art collection or a great gift for a textile collector.
