This listing is for a 1912 mailed advertising packet for J.S. Shields & Co. in New York, NY. Specifically it is advertising their new "Worsted Suits" to an existing customer. The packet includes a folded one-page ad for the suits which has 7 sample swatches of suit material, a letter that appears to be hand-signed by J.S. Shields himself, four order forms, and four return envelopes (one of which is hand-written, possibly also by Shields). Finally, the original outer envelope (in poor condition) is still present (minus some chipping, primarily to the flap).Condition DetailsThis advertising packet is over 110 years old, and has certainly sustained wear during that time. For condition details, please read the following paragraphs.
Seems to have tobacco odor--be aware if allergic. The ad mentions a "card" that could be sent in for a swatch book (See 7th Photo)--this card is not present. Signed letter mentions "the swatch book we sent you", however--so it is possible the card was not included due to book already having been sent. As such, I am not entirely certain if this lot includes everything originally sent in this envelope or not.
Main ad has creases/wrinkles (See 15th/16th Photos), small tears, tiny spots (See 17th Photo), etc., but nothing that interferes w/ content itself.
Signed letter has stains to front (quite noticeable, but do not affect readability--See 18th Photo) & serious soiling to back (See 19th Photo). Letter also has a fair amount of creasing.
Order forms have varying issues including staining (See 20th Photo), small tears, a glued-on paper fragment (See 21st Photo), & general creasing to all. Return envelopes all have varied degrees of wear/soiling (See 22nd Photo for close-up of most soiled envelope).Outer envelope is VERY dirty & stained (See Last Photo). Envelope is also in poor condition w/ tears, chipping, creasing, etc. Second postmark (on back) is very faint (See 14th Photo). I will be keeping envelope in a separate bag to avoid any additional transfer of grime to other items.
In short, in generally worn (and in some cases soiled) condition. All text (with exception of second postmark) remains readable, and imagery (where present) is clear. Swatches are also present and appear to be in good condition (besides some edge fraying).Please see included photos.
