RARE: 1903 ORIGINAL First Hawaii Promotion Committee Brochure COMPLETE Hawaiian:
$80.00

Very rare 1903 original of the first booklet printed by the Hawaii Promotion Committee for distribution in the continental United States. The paper is brittle (120 years old) and beginning to chip around the edges. The front cover has separated from the brochure. All pages are present. The last photo shows an envelope that was in the same folder. It may or may not have accompanied the brochure. I will include it.

The following history and description of this booklet is taken from the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau's website:

On July 19, 1902, the Merchants Association proposed a permanent tourism promotion bureau. By 1903 a source of funding had been secured--a share of the voluntary tonnage tax shippers levied to rat-proof the docks and later to create a public health emergency fund and to promote business.

That same year, the first Territorial Legislature debated tourism promotion for the first time--and rejected the Joint Tourist Committee's request for $10,000. Then Governor Sanford Dole backed the chamber's plea for reconsideration and $15,000 was approved for what became the Hawaiʻi Promotion Committee.

One of the first orders of business was for the Committee to publish a brochure advertising all the islands had to offer. The brochure totals 24 pages –  profusely illustrated with black and white photographs by the leading photographers of the day – plus covers. The brochure was lithographed and printed by the H.S. Crocker Company of San Fransisco and intended to be folded in half for convenient mailing.

The last page states, “If you are contemplating a Journey for the future, then write at once for information... All are beautifully illustrated and your address on a postcard will mean that you get any one desired.” The back cover consisted of a lithographed collage of Hawaiian scenes – prominently featuring a scene of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head  – and an inset verse by Mark Twain.

Item will be carefully packed and insured to the full purchase price.
