He was able toturn his lifetime passion for trains into a career, first joiningRailroadModel Craftsmanand later launching Railfan& Railroad, growing the company as a major publisher of exciting hobby books andmagazines. In this book, you’ll enjoymorethan 100 pages of color photos selectedby the editors spanning Hal Carsten's trackside adventures for morethan sixty years. From coast to coast, from steam to diesel(and trolleys, too), from main lines to short lines and everything inbetween!FromCoast to Coast:
HalCarstens traveled extensively as he represented his company to thehobby industry. Whether it was for the National Model RailroadAssociation, the National Railway Historical Society, the ModelRailroad Industry Association, or any one of the many organizationsHal supported, his camera always went with him. From the south end ofFlorida to the California coast, Hal documented the rail scene in itstwo major transitions — from steam to diesel and from numerousscattered Class 1's to large merged companies.

TheGolden Age of Steam:
Ina time when many photographers stuck with black and white, Halbranched out and experimented with color. He was able to capture manysteam operations in their waning years, in vibrantfull color. Thanks to these early forays into color, Hal provides us with adramatic look back at the GoldenAge of Steam Railroadingin America. When mainline steam vanished from American rails, Halcould be found trackside as some engines found their second wind inthe excursion era.

Tractionand trolleys, too!
Fromcity streetcar lines, to regional interurban systems and everythingin between, Hal was there to ride and photograph them. Duringhis frequent railfan trips he was able to document many of America’sremaining lines. Some lines like the Chicago North Shore &Milwaukee, Philadelphia & Western or the Washington D.C. andBaltimore city lines were captured as they neared the end of theirservice lives. Others like San Francisco’s historic cable cars andNew Orleans’ St. Charles Line streetcars were photographed goingabout their daily business that has continued to the present timewith little interruption.
