ORIGINAL JAMES VALENTINE (1815-1879) 'MONTEGO BAY (MOONLIGHT) JAMAICA' ALBUMEN CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPHThis is a great piece. If you have been following my store, I have been buying and selling a lot of photography lately. Photography from all years and all styles. When I found this one I was very excited as it is one of the earliest photographs you are going to find of Jamaica. Valentine was an important photographer of the 19th Century who did mostly Europe but eventually ventured off the continent and documented other areas like Jamaica. This is a beautiful large albumen photograph view of the bay from a hill above. Outstanding view looking through the palms at some early sailboats floating in the water with the landscape in the distance. Wonderful contrast of the moonlit bay are displayed in this photograph. Image measures 9 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches on its original cabinet card mount that measures 13 7/8 x 17 inches. Along the bottom margin of the photograph within the image is the photographers title, initials, and inventory number. The photograph is in excellent condition with some minor scuffing that you can see in the finish at a certain angle. The view straight on shows none of them. The card mount shows some chip loss to the corners but they would be covered up if you were to matte and frame this. Do your research on this photograph. Valentine's Jamaica views are some of his rarest and most desirable and very rarely ever come to market. There was an exhibition of the Jamaica work in 2017 in London and those were all curated from an institution. None were from private collections. Dont miss this chance, especially such a great early view.
