These make beautiful cut and polished cabochons with different patterns depending on which way you cut the stone.I have included a photo of what the material looks like when it is cut into a slice for making lapidary cabochons or other cut and polished pieces.

The obsidian deposits of Davis Creek, California are the "gemstones" of obsidian and world famous. In 2018, the US Forest Service shut down all mining at Davis Creek. The only way to get this material is if you are friends with "the guy" that was mining at Davis Creek for 40 years. He has a stockpile he mined before the location was shut down.

You will receive the one specimen from the lot shown in the photos that is 4 inch to 6 inch and weighing 1 pound to 2 pounds.

Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass. It is formed when volcanic lava comes into contact with water; this forces it to cool so quickly that it doesn't have time to crystallize resulting in a stone with a shiny, glassy texture.Obsidian is hard and brittle; it therefore fractures with very sharp edges, which were used in the past in cutting and piercing tools, and it has been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades.Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because as a glass it is not crystalline; in addition, its composition is too variable to be classified as a mineral.
