GM&O GP30s wore a distinctive “new” paint scheme – stark
modern-looking black-and-white, unlike anything seen on the
Alton or GM&O in all the previous years. The unique design
was suggested and designed by builder EMD, the rationale
being better visibility at grade crossings. 20 GP30s arrived in
1962-63, then a whopping 48 successor GP35s arrived in
the same paint scheme in 1964-65. They were followed by
orders for GP38s, GP38ACs and GP38-2s. These were de-
livered in red/white variations of that modern paint design.
Most of these GPs retained their distinctive paint for many
years after mergeing into ICG. Andy chose GP30s for this
dramatic painting because of his fondness for that model;
and among GP30s, GM&O units might just be the most
distinctive!
