This vintage Kanna <Hidari-Nagamitsu/左長光> is.
- Cleaned, and removed the rust, blacking with gun blue liquid.
- Double-edged blade.
- Blade: 70mm (2.76in) Wide (lower) x 102mm (4.02in) Tall,used.
- Chip-breaker: 61mm Wide x 49mm Tall, used.
- Wood Bottom Dai: 87mm (3.43in) Wide x 272mm (10.71 in) Length x 35mm (1.38in) Thickness, used.
- "For finishing (仕上げ鉋)" is stamped on the blade (Photo 12-14).
- ***The wood Dai is NEW!! and"Tsutsumi" style.
- The oblique surface for inserting blade was applied epoxy resin to fit the surface with blade and to protect the Dai from drying out.
- Surface of the Dai-sole is tuned in two-touch point.
- The Dai-sole has some shallow scratches, it might be scratched by chisel, I think. The water content of the new dai is higher than the old one, so the weight is heavier, and has more tenacity.
Inmy video, I performed planing a SPF wood timber using each Kannas. Asa result of fine tuning of Dai-sole and sharpening the bladeedges, wood shavings leaped out from Kanna were very thin like a silkfabric.
Whenyou buy a used Kanna you have to set up it to planning in smoothly byyourself. Not only sharpening the blade-edge, but also reshape theblade, also sharpening the chip-breaker blade (counter-blade) andtune the sole of wood bottom “Dai”. It took a few days to havethese tuning.
Ifyou have Kanna for the first time you might be confused because ofmany things to do. (See the below website)
Nowyou have a chance to get ready-to-use. As soon an the Kanna arrives, you can use it but you should re-sharpen the blade from time to timeto maintain its sharpness.
Maintenance
Ialways use the whetstone #1,000 grit for mid and #6,000 grit forfinal sharpening the blade-edge (See the Amazon-site). #10,000 grit or more fine whetstone would be better.
