Most likely taken at a brothel in Storyville, New Orleans for a patron who wanted amemento of his visit. Because of the prohibitive costs of photography at the time, only very wealthy patrons could afford such a luxurioussouvenir. Original photographs of sex worker from this era are exceptionally rare.

The photography studio of B. & G. Moses Photographers was operated by Bernard (1832-1899) and Gustave A. Moses (1836-1915) in New Orleans. Originally from Bavaria, the brother immigrated to New Orleans and were trained as daguerreians by their father.
