I call this image The Levitating Sisters. Of course these two young girls aren't actually levitating. It just appears this way. The shadows their dresses cast are obscuring their feet and create the odd impression that they're actually floating a few inches above the ground. Sometimes we plan these things and sometimes meaning is accidental. Sometimes meaning builds over time, years after a photograph was taken. I think of this image as a happy accident, and like many of the images I've collected over the years it skews just a bit south of fact. I've always been interested in photography that deviates from the norm, that forces the viewer into what some might consider the position of never really knowing which end is up. That is, it anoints the viewer into a world where meaning is sketchy, fugitive, shadowy at best, a world where the image travels lesser known routes to meaning. And when it arrives it's less a destination than a point of departure. Which is precisely what this image is for me: a jumping off point for further exploration. It's impressionistic, and it favors the lyrical over the literal, which might explain why I've been so intrigued by it all these years. And to be honest it's a bit frightening too. These sisters, with their high foreheads and cold stares and vertigo inducing dresses remind me of the Grady twins from Kubrick's Grand Guignol masterpiece The Shining.
