From his Obituary in of 1900: Charles L; Davis. One of the Best-Known Character Actors of America:PITTSBURG, March 1— Charles L. Davis (Alvin Joslyn),
the well-known character actor, and owner of the Alvin Theater of this city, died to-night, aged 52 years.
He had been sick for several weeks with peritonitis and paralysis of the throat and died after much suffering.
Mr. Davis came of theatrical parents and was born while his parents were on the road.
He went on the stage at the age of five years and was in the show business continuously from that time until 1899,
when he retired and built the Alvin T.heater at a cost of $225.000.
At the time of its building, the Alvin was considered the finest theatrical house in America, but it was too much of a burden
and in its second season the Fort Pitt Bank, which held much of Mr. Davis' paper, took charge of the house
with the understanding that when the $170,000 indebtedness was cleared its owner should resume charge. Mr. Davis was known throughout the entire country as Alvin Joslyn, the New England farmer character,
which he originated in the early 1860’s, and which was the medium through which he made a fortune.
He was not known to have a living relative.Charles L. Davis, more generally known as "Alvin
Joslin." His principal title to fame came from the fact
that because of his remarkable business ability and
superb showmanship he was able to make a large fortune
with perhaps the poorest vehicle in the way of a play that
was ever inflicted on an audience. (hack melodrama - rowdy music)
Davis advertised in
the most extraordinary fashion ; he would stand on street
corners and attract vast crowds, holding forth as to the
merits of his play and its performance. At such times he
would be literally covered with diamonds. His ostentation
in this respect being wholly inconceivable to one not
accustomed to gaze upon the spectacle. (from www)"Uncle Alvin Joslin." -- Historically Important !

Vaudeville is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment. It was especially popular in the United States and Canada starting in the early 1880s. A typical vaudeville performance is made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Types of acts have included popular and classical musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, trained animals, magicians, female and male impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, one-act plays or scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, minstrels, and movies. A vaudeville performer is often referred to as a "vaudevillian".Vaudeville developed from many sources, including the risque concert saloon, minstrelsy, freak shows, dime museums, and literary American burlesque. Called "the heart of American show business", vaudeville was one of the most popular types of entertainment in North America for several decades.
