Brachiopodsor “lamp shells”, any member of the phylum Brachiopoda, a group ofbottom-dwelling marine invertebrates. They are covered by two valves, orshells; one valve covers the dorsal, or top, side; the other covers the ventral,or bottom, side. The valves, of unequal size, are bilaterally symmetrical;i.e., the right and left sides are mirror images of one another. Brachiopods(from the Greek words meaning “arm” and “foot”) are commonly known as lampshells because theyresembleearly Roman oil lamps.

Brachiopodsoccur in all oceans. Although no longer numerous, they were once one of themost abundant forms of life.

Members ofthis phylum first appeared rather early in zoological history. It is possible,by means of fossil representatives, to survey their evolution fromtheCambrian Period(about 542 million years ago) to the present.Although some of the evolutionary development is revealed, it is stillimperfectly understood. Other than their usefulness in dating geologicalperiods, members of this phylum have no economic value, except as curios andmuseum pieces.

Most brachiopods are small, about 1 inch or less in length or width;some are minute, measuring more than1/30of aninch or slightly more; some fossil forms are relative giants—about 15 incheswide. The largest modern brachiopod is about 4 inches in length.
