This is an authentic Hanuman Keris (an asymmetrical dagger from the Indonesian island of Java) Holder, from Indonesia. These kind of statues were used in Indonesia to honor and display the best Keris (the family Keris or Keris Pusaka) in their home. This statue is the monkey god Hanuman, Hanuman (Anoman) is the monkey chief, mythical leader of a large troop of ape-like creatures, ally of Rama in his war against Ravana, the demon -king of Lanka (Ramayana). Through the stories of Ramayana, he has become a very popular and loved character. He is symbol of valor and loyalty. Still now in Bali, Hanuman is a particularly sakti character and he is very present in the Balinese society.
This impressive piece of historical art still has amazing color and remains in excellent condition. The main colors used in this depiction are a rusty red, blues, black, white and a small amount of gold on the fearsome god's crown. In the hand of the monkey god is a carved wooden keris to replace the traditional family keris. I cannot find any major defects except the crack the runs vertically near the base (please see last photo). Even the god's fangs are still in tact with no chipping.
