Saturday's Toys Presents Treasures from Disney Historian Paul F. Anderson

We are pleased to represent a unique selection of items from the personal collection of Paul F. Anderson, noted Disney author, researcher, and historian.  Paul is also founder of the Disney History Institute.

This listing includes an extremely rare cover illustration of Mickey Mouse (and interior Christmas greeting from Walt Disney) for The Anahgram magazine (Yuletide, 1937) from the Anah Temple (Shriners) of Bangor, Maine.

The Christmas issue of this publication includes Walt's greeting to the children at Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts (now known as the Shriners Children's Hospital).  The original buildings (pictured within the publication) served the community from 1925 until 1990, when new buildings were constructed behind the original hospital facilities.  Upon completion of the impressive new hospital, the old buildings were demolished and a new parking lot and entrance area were constructed where the original buildings once stood.

The cover and first two pages are dedicated to this Christmas greeting from Mickey Mouse (and Walt Disney!)... and includes the original Christmas 1937 illustration that was created exclusively for the children of Springfield Hospital.  While the specific illustrator is not mentioned, it is likely that the design came from the office of Hank Porter, staff artist at the Publicity Art Department at the Walt Disney Studio on Hyperion Avenue.  Porter had arrived at the studio only one year before as the entire enterprise was entering final production for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."  As this particular publication was being prepared for release, Walt Disney's first full-length animated film was nearly ready for release (premiering on Dec. 21, 1937).  The upcoming release is also referenced within the brief article and expression of appreciation to Walt Disney for this notable gift to the patients at the hospital.  The art served as the basis for preparing a personal Christmas greeting for each of the 60 patients then receiving care at the hospital.

Here, Mickey is wearing the Anah "fez" hat that was commonly worn at organizational gatherings of  the Shriners and is an ongoing symbol of the charitable works that have identified the group for the past century.

The Shriners organization throughout the United States had selected the Springfield site as the eighth children's orthopedic hospital in their healthcare system.  The organization now represents a century of investment in creating the 22 hospitals that are currently serving the needs of children throughout the world.

The publication measures 6" x 9".  The organizational updates and announcements are featured within 12 pages, while the center section of an additional 30 pages features details and photos of each hospital within the Shriners healthcare system (as of 1937).

Originally held within the personal library of Everett E. McIninch (1910 - 1989) of Old Town, Maine.

The publication is rarely found today and is offered exclusively from the historic Disney collection of Paul F. Anderson.

PAUL F. ANDERSON BIOGRAPHY:

Paul F. Anderson has spent well over half of his liferesearching, writing, and delving into the creative legacy of Walt Disney. Hebegan this interest in the mid-Seventies when his father gifted him with a copyof Christopher Finch’s Art of Walt Disney. Over the next several years, he researched, studied, and wrote about thelife and times of Walt Disney. This interest continued on through college andserved as a subject for his Master’s Degree. As a recognized expert on WaltDisney and his works, he was contacted by PBS in 1989 to work on a televisiondocumentary exploring the history of animation. Starting as the “Disney historian”on the project, he began to interview many of the old-timers that had workedwith Disney. In little time, he found himself serving as Associate Producer onthe show, titled Cartoon Mania!  Thiswork for PBS provided him with the opportunity and inspiration to preserveDisney history, which he does by interviewing many of the creative individualsthat worked with Walt Disney.  Feeling aneed, and a responsibility, for his work to be shared with others, Paul starteda historical journal devoted to the creative legacy of Walt Disney titledPersistence of Vision, for which he served as editor and publisher. Paul hasalso traveled across the United States giving lectures and talks on WaltDisney, as well as to teach an occasional college class on Walt Disney inAmerican Culture.
