Wonderful Couple African Solid Bronze Ancestor statues of the MANGBETU tribe from D.R. Congo.
Mangbetu art, famous for its realism, is a court art. Figures are believed to be ancestral portraits. It was developed under the impetus of the clan chiefs who wanted to show off their power and wealth. Royal celebrations, which took place in large vaulted sheds, were opportunities for exhibiting these objects of luxury and refinement.
Beautifully made, with plenty of details, tribal scarifications and the fro Mangebetu typical hairdo. They have a beautiful age related brown, greenish patina.
This statue is of high quality and was made with the - cire perdue technique-, and is therefore unique in it\'s kind. Beautifully finished off in detail.
