For some time we have been receivingreports from Japan that the Bridge-stone factory has set up a handful of scram-blers based on their Sport 90. Always, thereports have been glowing, sprinkled withsuch adjectives as “near-unbeatable,” “un-believable," and so-on, but since one isconstantly besieged with rumors in thisbusiness, one simply wails until there isconclusive proof that the stories have sub-stance.In this instance, the reports appear tobe accurate and a limited number ofBridgestone 90 Scramblers now in the U.S.promise to make under-lOOcc racing prettylively in the months to come. The claimed 8.8 bhp of the BridgestoneSport 90 has been increased to 12 bhp(claimed) for the Bridgestone 90 Scram-bler. This gain has been attained by in-creasing (he opening duration of the rotaryvalve 10 degrees; modifying the cylindertransfer porting; increasing the size of thecarburetor from 17mm to 18mm; raisingthe compression ratio to 10:1; advancingignition timing to 23 degrees btc; addingan expansion chamber: and replacing thealternator with a constant-loss ignitionsystem. But the "mods" don’t end here. Thescrambler is fitted with a small, but com-fortable seat (despite its lack of padding),high, reinforced bars, a modified top forkbridge, a smaller gas tank, an alloy frontfender, Class C-type 2.75 x 17-inch tires, folding pegs and a number plate. The toolchest is eliminated, as are the center standand lighting gear (of course). The sidestand has been retained and its attendant"weight penalty” is easily offset by theconvenience of not having to scout for arock, a box or a tailgate to support thebike when it is inactive. The rear fender has been neatly pared, and while a pound or so has probablythus been eliminated, we rather imaginethat this change has been made in the in-terest of appearance.Suspension on the Bridgestone 90Scrambler is quite stiff — surprisingly so.The manufacturer feels that the machineis sufficiently versatile to be used in justabout any type of dirt surface competition, but the ride would be difficult to take forvery long periods over really rough ter-rain. Standing position is not too bad fora rider a bit shorter than average, and it’slikely that the bike will have its greatestappeal to this size person. Therefore, noquarrel. The Scrambler handles slowly;that is. it isn't quick to cross up and thisis particularly good for a light machinewith so much power. Even with the heav-iest of the staffers aboard, the Bridge-stone would send up a nice, steady streamof track on its way out of a turn with thepower on. The bike must be pushed downhard into a turn to cross it up, and after...
