Operational history[edit]VF-10 pilots onUSSEnterpriseduring theGuadalcanal Campaign(2nd Commander of VF-10William R. "Killer" Kane(8 claims) in front row on knee, 5th from right).VF-10 was established atNAS San Diegoflying theGrumman F4F Wildcat. The first commanding officer wasJames H. Flatleyfresh from theBattle of the Coral Sea. TheGrim Reapersdeployed withUSSEnterpriseto theSouthern Pacificin October 1942 where they participated in theBattle of Guadalcanal. As part of that campaign, theGrim Reapersplayed a pivotal role in defending theEnterpriseand its task force during theBattle of Santa Cruz Islandsfrom 25-27 October 1942. After their return to the U.S. andNAS Sand Pointthey transitioned to theGrumman F6F-3 Hellcatand once again deployed to the South Pacific aboardEnterprise. During their second combat tour, VF-10 participated in operations in theMarshall Islands,Jaluit,Emirau,Western Caroline Islands,Hollandia,Truk Lagoonand theBattle of the Philippine Sea(Marianas Turkey Shoot).
VF-10Grumman F6F Hellcatsreturning to theUSSEnterprisein 1944.The squadron returned to the States, transitioning to theVought F4U Corsairin January 1945[2]atNAS Atlantic City. VF-10 returned to the Pacific aboardUSSIntrepid[3]and took part in strikes againstRyukyu Islands,Kyūshū,Okinawaand theWake Island. Finally, VF-10 returned toNAS Alamedawhere it was deactivated in November 1945.
