SIR SIDNEY LEE

(1859-1926) He was an English biographer, writer

and critic. In 1883, Lee became assistant-editor of the

Dictionary of National Biography. In 1890 he became

joint editor, and on the retirement of Sir Leslie

Stephen in 1891, succeeded him as editor. He received

a knighthood in 1911. From 1913-24, he served as

Professor of English Literature and Language at

East London College. Letter (in the hand of

a secretary),signed by Lee, 24 May 1900, on

official 4-1/2 x 7-1/2 letterhead, regarding an image

of a Shakespeare autograph, age staining at upper left

and right corners, rough along the left edge,

still very good.
