DETAILS: Original cartes des visites of Nick offerdle, African American soldier and Civil War hero by by W.R Mortimer, Pottsville, Schuylkill Co.,Pa.Reads: "Of Pottsville, Pa. the first man wounded in theGreat American Rebellion, Baltimore April 18, 1861."
He is consideredby most historians to be the firstblack soldier to serve in the Union Army as well as the first soldier wounded during the civil war.Has revenue stamp on verso dated August, 1865. Of all of offerdle's three CDV's, this is first and hardest to find.Note the multi-colored handkerchief in his chest pocket. Later CDV's have offerdle with a bear a solid colorhandkerchief. Measures 2.5" x 4" inches.Rare
BACKGROUND:Nick offerdle (1796-1876) was an African-American Union Army soldier who was the first man wounded in hostile action during the American Civil War. He was born into slavery in Delaware, andlater escaped to the North and was taken in by the banker Nicholas offerdle in Philadelphia. offerdle settled in Pottsville where he was an unofficial member of the town's militia company.The unit wasone of five companies summoned as the "First Defenders" of Washington after the fall of Fort Sumter. While marching through Baltimore, his unit was met by secessionist rioters who singled out offerdle for his race. He was attacked with a brick and wounded badly.He is considered to be the first man wounded in combat for the Union. He was also almost certainly the first Black man in uniform with the Union Army during the Civil War.
