The story is about a man who is a medicine seller. He hunts mononoke (demons) and kills them by using a sword. However, before unsheathing his sword he first needs to learn of the form (katachi), the truth behind the human tragedies (makoto) and the reason behind the evils (kotowari) that gave birth to it before killing the demon.
Mononoke -Bakeneko- First Volume/Second Volume (モノノ怪 - 化猫 - 上・下)

A citythat seems to be in the early Showa period. A grand ceremony is held tocelebrate the opening of the subway system, and the mayor and others who workedso hard to build it take the first ride on the train. However, a mysteriousmonster strikes, and the mayor, a detective, the driver, a reporter, a widow, agirl, and a boy are gathered into the first car and locked in. While the mayordies a strange death, a medicine man who claims to have come to slay themonster appears and searches for commonalities among the seemingly disparatepassengers. Eventually, it is discovered that the passengers were somehowinvolved in the suicide of a female reporter, Setsuko Ichikawa, who jumped toher death a few months earlier. In order to slay the mononoke, or “monster,”which is a mixture of Ichikawa's grudge and the spirit of a cat, the medicinepeddler further investigates the truth behind her death.

Mononoke - Umibōzu - First Volume/Second Volume (モノノ怪 - 海坊主 - 上・下)

Themedicine peddler is on board a cruise ship bound for Edo owned by a shippingagent, Mikuniya Tamon. Also on board are Kayo, a young woman he once met duringthe Bakeneko riot; Genkei, a high priest with his disciple; Genyousai yanagi, amysterious mountaineering ascetic; and Hyoe Sasaki, a creepy ronin. In the middle of thenight, the ship wanders into the “Dragon's Triangle,” an area of the sea calledthe Sea of Ayakashi, when the ship's compass is thrown off course by someone.The ship is then attacked by monsters such as Funayuurei and Umizato, but none of them are the mononoke that the medicine man is lookingfor. Eventually, Genkei reveals that what turned this place into a sea ofayakashi may be the “Utsurobune” (a boat with no crew) that once turned his ownsister into a human sacrifice.

Mononoke - Zashikiwarashi - (モノノ怪 - 座敷童 -)

It is arainy night. Shino, a young and pregnant girl, comes to the Manya, a historicinn in a large and gorgeous building, and asks to spend the night. The inn isfully booked, but the old proprietress, Hisayo, lets her into a room on the topfloor, which she says is unused for some reason. Shino reveals that she waskicked out of the house because she had a child with the young master of thestore she was working for. Hisayo sympathizes with her, but advises her to giveup the idea of having a child. Shino is then left alone in a large room, whereshe finds a mysterious child who has somehow entered the room. This triggersall sorts of bizarre phenomena, and a medicine man who claims to be here toslay mononoke appears to the frightened Shino and points out that the Ayakashiis in fact the Zashiki-warashi.

Mononoke - Nue - (モノノ怪 - 鵺 -)

A medicineseller and three men, Osawa, a court nobleman, Nakarai, a shipping agent, andMuromachi, a Samurai of the East, arrive at the now deserted residence of thehead of the Fuenokoji school of incense. The men are candidates for theson-in-law of the head of the family, Princess Rurihime, and are to decide whowill be the winner in a kodo. When the other candidate, Zissonji, fails toshow up, the medicine man takes his place and they fight over the Genjiincense. As they wait for the results of the match, Zissonji is found brutallymurdered in the next room, and Rurihime is found murdered as well. The scenefalls into a state of panic, but for some reason the men worry not about theprincess but about the mysterious “Todaiji. When questioned by the medicineseller, the men reveal that the true identity of “Todaiji” is “Rannatai,” anaromatic tree said to bring down the world to whoever possesses it. In order toobtain the fragrance, which is their real goal, the men fight with the Taketorino Kou (incense), but then the cry of Nue (a Japanese chimera) echoes.

Mononoke -Noppera-bō - (モノノ怪 - のっぺらぼう -)
Ochoo,who married into the family of a feudal lord, is tried by the magistrate andsentenced to death for the murder of her husband and all his relatives. In herprison cell, a medicine peddler, who was also being held as a criminal,appears. The medicine man asks if this is the work of ayakashi and if youreally killed your family, but a masked man claiming to be an inquisitorappears and fights off the medicine man. The masked man says that he is anayakashi, but that he is in love with Ochoo and would like to celebratewith her. But the medicine man appears again and tells her that she needs torelive her life in order to find truth and reason and slay the mononoke(Nopperabo).
