Koho Shoda Japanese Woodblock Print Miyajima Shrine Hasegawa Vintage Japan Art Description and Item Information
Up for sale is this vintage woodblock print on paper by the well-known Japanese artist, Koho Shoda. Please excuse any glare in the photos. The nocturnal scene depicted includes a fishing boat near the Miyajima Shrine Gate. A full moon is in the night sky. The print is not matted or framed. The image area measures approximately 10 1/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches. The paper measures approximately 11 3/16 inches by 8 inches. This would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Japanese works of art on paper. Identification
This print is known as, "Shrine Gate of Miyajima" by Koho Shoda (circa 1871 - circa 1946). Koho Shoda was part of the shin-hanga movement of Japanese art. He was born in Kanda, Tokyo. He was a student of Ogata Gekko. The exact age of this old print is not known, but it is vintage. There are markings on the left and right sides, as shown. On the back, there are publisher markings from Nishinomiya Yosaku of Tokyo, as shown. This print was part of a series of nocturnals, Hasegawa's Night Scenes.
Condition
This unframed print looks good overall, as shown. The paper has toning/darkening and rippling. The discoloration is apparent near the edges of the image area, as there is a color contrast between blue and yellowed areas, likely from previous framing. At the top margin, there is unknown dark coloration (staining or soiling) on the front and back sides. There are scattered, small light-colored areas where either the surface is worn, or maybe there was less ink applied originally. There are no holes or rips.The back side is as shown; there are some small areas where there is glue and paper from previous mounting. Someink smudges on the margins are as made. The top and left edges of the paper are irregular, as made. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to offerding or buying.
