This letter was typewritten and signed -- apparently in fountain pen -- by Mr. Franklin, who was, by this time, 74 years old and had sadly lost his H. H. Franklin Automobile Co. only four years earlier to bankruptcy as the War approached.

The letter is addressed to author Walter L. Smith, thanking him for sending a complimentary copy of his limited-edition book Lewis S. Smith and Family of "Old Yorkshire." Mr. Franklin was thrilled to receive the book (which is a fantastic genealogy of the Smith family of Lisle, N.Y.) since Franklin himself was, as he put it, "... an old 'Lisle boy.' He was born and raised in Lisle.

(This is most likely not THE copy of the book that was given to Mr. Franklin as mentioned in his letter ... since I purchased this from a different source. However, it does make a lovely ensemble to keep along with the letter.)

As a genealogy, this book is exceptional. It's not just a collection of dry information. Rather, what you have is more than 30 pages of photos, maps, and very interesting family anecdotes. (See samples of some of the pages, pictured in this listing.) Walter L. Smith was obviously a very good writer, and he made sure this book was well worth the reading.

Condition Details:

As with all my listings (unless explicitly stated otherwise), they come from a NON-smoking environment.

- The letter is in immaculate condition. No stains, water damage, etc. Aging issues: There are a few "flea bites" (as shown) that appear to be the result of storing it in close proximity to another piece of paper with staples in it.

- The genealogy book has age-related issues: Front cover missing, first page has come loose and has some stains, and general yellowing of the paper throughout. (But this is a very rare, limited-edition book, so I feel it deserves some forgiveness for its condition issues.)

The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.
