We are offering a Reception Programme Broadside for the 1869 Graduates from a Dover, New Hampshire college, which was held at City Hall. Unfortunately, the name of the college is not mentioned, nor is the state - simply says "Dover". However, the broadside was printed by the Dover Enquirer, which was a Dover, New Hampshire newspaper.
The program begins with a strangely titled Tableau [a group of motionless figures representing a scene from a story or from history] titled "Moloch and Satan before the powers of Hell". Moloch appears to have been an ancient pagan god to whom sacrifices were made. The Old Testament Bible makes reference to him, with God forofferding his people to do as the Egyptians or the Canaanites did - "You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Moloch, and so profane the name of your God". Next was an Historical Representation - of Liberty, Oppression, England, and France - each one represented by a young lady. A Piano Solo followed, and then a Declaration - "Virginius to the Romans" [Latin for Virgin to the Romans]. Lastly, was "Double-Bedded Room", which we assume was a skit. **NOTE** - these types of weird performances or activities very often related to fraternities of Ivy Leage Colleges, which were normally merely poking fun at or making humorous situations out of serious or creepy historical occurrences.
