AldrichAmes worked as an officer of the CIA's Directorate of Operations, tasked withintelligence matters relating to the Soviet Union. Ames' job responsibilitiesgave him access to the identities of some of the Soviet sources who had beenrecruited and operated by U.S. intelligence agencies. Ames’s Russian code name was KOLOKOL, Russianfor bell.

Duringthe 1980's, Ames identified to the Soviet KGB 25 CIA “human assets,” in returnfor $2.7 million. As many as 10 were executed. Ames was arrested in 1994, alongwith his wife Rosario Ames, who assisted in his espionage activities. AldrichAmes was convicted of one count of espionage and sentenced to life in prison.
