1911 WWI US Army Doughboy Tunic Uniform Summer Service Coat Jacket
Description...
This is a 1911 summer service uniform, It is made of cotton drill and is unlined. The coat is single breasted with five removable bronze general service buttons in front. The buttons were a new pattern introduced in 1911, made of bronze metal with a rimmed edge and lines behind the US Coat-of-Arms. In addition, the coat has a standing collar, shoulder loops, and plain cuffs. There are also four pockets in front, each with a flap secured by a small bronze general service button.
The inside of the coat is stamped in numerous places with the marking of "700-2214". Unfortunately I do not know the meaning of this marking.
There were dark bronze discs, 1 inch in diameter, worn on the collar, with a US disc on the right and a branch disc [80th Infantry] on the left. NOTE: These collar discs are not included with this purchase as they were sold separately.

Owner Provenance...My great, great uncle was owner of this coat, and it was used in at least three engagements. He served in the 80th Infantry Division mustering from West Virginia. During WWI, the 80th was assigned to the III Army and participated in several campaigns:
  • Battle of the Somme from Aug 21 to Sep 3 1918 (14 days)
  • Battle of Saint-Mihiel from Sep 12-15 1918 (4 days)
  • Meuse–Argonne Offensive from Sep 26 until the Armistice of Nov 11 1918 (47 days)
The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was arguably the largest of all American forces during World War I. The 80th Infantry's principal objective was to capture the railroad hub at Sedan, which would break the rail network supporting the German army in central France. The 80th was subjected to constant artillery and suffered heavy losses, as they were placed front and center of the battlefield near the Meuse River.
