For your consideration we are offering this antique Victorian era marriage certificate. The colorful matrimony document is a draft from the collection of Frances A. Lammer. Mr. Lammer was employed as an engraver for Tiffany & Co. This certificate appears to be near the final draft. The finished document was presented to W. Watts Sherman & Sophia Augusta Brown after their wedding in 1885. William Watts Sherman was a wealthy NYC businessman. He was associated with the banking firm of Duncan, Sherman & Co. A presidential elector for Teddy Roosevelt. Member of the "Society of the Cincinnati". He built a mansion in Newport R.I. which is now a Historic Landmark. Sophia Augusta Brown was a heiress and socialite. Brown University was named in honor of her grandfather. Certificate measures 13.75" x 12.25". Fair condition. Some pencil mark notations by the engraver. Right upper corner has a repair. Back shows old glue marks. We will consider a reasonable offer.
