The M17 eliminated the need for a canister due to filters located in the cheek of the mask. The mask was designed to protect against respiratory gas attacks, biological attacks, and radioactive particles. Integrated drinking tube allows the user to access their canteen without being contaminated. The elastic strap system allows the user to quickly put on their mask and synch it down tight. This mask is a great piece of American history and would make a good collector's piece. The difference between the M17A1 and M17A2 is the drinking tube that was added in the 1970's. steam punk
