US MODEL 1872 SPRINGFIELD TROWEL BAYONET WITH LEATHER SCABBARD INDIAN WARS ERA:

US Army Model 1872 Trowel Bayonet complete with scabbard. Trowel is in nice shape with lots of arsenal polish and blue on the handle. The spring device works nicely so handle can be removed or inserted. Repro wooden handle Not included. Bayonet handle marked in very tiny lettering "PAT APR 16 '72". Can be seen in magnified 5th photo. Leather scabbard in great shape overall.
A great idea initially during the Indian Wars for digging in hard desert soil but failed in use because rather than inserting wooden handle the troops would keep it affixed to the Springfield rifle for more leverage which bent the rifle barrels making them useless to fire. Hence another great idea had to be abandoned due to improper use in the field. Nice Clean Example but scabbard is MISSING the US brass insignia. Priced accordingly a very nice US Army trowel bayonet.
