Professor Nguyen Van Chi (1903 -1989) was a teacher and revolutionary, a teacher devoted to his students.

He was the first Director of theSouthern Department of Education since 1945, served as Chairman of theRevolutionary People\'s Committee of Saigon - Gia Dinh City, Chairman of theVietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.

Professor Nguyen Van Chi was bornin 1903 in Luong Hoa Lac Commune, Ben Tranh District (now merged into Cho Gao),Tien Giang.

Originally an elementary schoolteacher, but later, through self-study, he passed the entrance exam atIndochina Pedagogical College. In 1928, he graduated with a major in Vietnameseliterature and went to teach at various High School, Van Liem (Can Tho), My ThoHigh School , Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City,formerly Pétrus Ky Saigon School.

A patriotic intellectual when the1940 Cochinchina uprising broke out, he began to head towards the path ofnational liberation led by the Communist Party.

Since then, he has secretlysupported the patriotic movement of students and actively participated in themovement to spread the national language to contribute to raising the people\'swill of the working masses.

The August Revolution (1945) wassuccessful, and together with teachers Dang Minh Tru and Tran Van Nguyen, theytook over the Southern School Department and held the position of Director.

At the same time, he also joinedthe Saigon - Cho Lon Union of Officials.

In 1946 he was captured by theFrench colonialists; but later, due to insufficient evidence was released. In1947, he went to the coastal area of ​​Dong Thap Muoi to join the resistancewar; and was assigned the responsibility of Director of the Southern Departmentof Education.

He, along with colleagues such asLe Van Chi and Dang Minh Tru, established a system of resistance high schoolsin the free zone.

After 1954, assigned by hissuperiors, he returned to Saigon and worked in the private EcclesiasticalUnion.

In 1960, he was arrested by the NgoDinh Diem government. Experiencing the prisons of Ba Hoa, Gia Dinh, GeneralPolice Department, Chi Hoa, Phu Loi, despite being oppressed and terrorized bythe enemy, he remained loyal to the people and the revolution, maintaining thetemper of a true intellectual.

In 1967, faced with a fiercestruggle by the religious community and public opinion, the enemy was forced torelease him. In 1968, he secretly entered the Southeast war zone, working atthe Central Education Subcommittee of the Southern Department with Mr. Le VanChi and Nguyen Van Kiet; After that, he was appointed Chairman of theRevolutionary People\'s Committee of Saigon - Gia Dinh city. In July 1975, hewas appointed Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi MinhCity.

In 1989, he died in Ho Chi MinhCity, at the age of 86. His grave is currently located in Luong Hoa Laccommune, Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province.
