This is a very cool plant fossil from the Paleocene of North Dakota. This interesting plate contains a fabulous Acer (Maple) Winged Seed ("Whirlybird"). The distinct Schizocarpic samara (winged fruit) displays fine detail - the large "wing" is well preserved, showing the white radiating lines in fine fashion. The striking fossil has wonderful white color and great contrast and is well showcased on the natural matrix plate that also contains some other seeds. This is an excellent specimen of this strange, airborne fruit from the Paleocene.
