MORRISON WAITE,FUTURE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT, WRITES 1862 LETTER TO OHIO DISTRICTATTORNEY

MORRISON WAITE (1816-1888).Waite served as the seventh Chief Justice of the United States from 1874 untilhis death.

ROBERT FINDLEY PAINE (1810-1888).Paine served as United States district attorney for the Northern District ofOhio and a judge on the Common Pleas Bench.

ALS. 1 pg. 8” x 10”. July 5, 1862. Toledo.An autographed letter signed “M.R. & R. Waite” to “R.F.Paine Esq.”: “Dr Sir, we notice by the papers that an indictment hasbeen formed against Hinds. May we ask what course under the circumstances youintend to pursue against his bail -”. This letter was written while RobertFindley Paine was serving as the United States district attorney for theNorthern District of Ohio, and while Morrison Remick Waite, still a decade fromselection as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was practicing law in Ohiowith his brother, Richard Waite. No online record appears to exist regardingthe case mentioned in the letter. The letter is in excellent condition on linedpaper.
