StephenPaul Breen(born April 26,1970 inLos Angeles,California) is a nationally syndicated cartoonist. He twicewon thePulitzer Prize, in 1998and 2009.He graduated fromHuntington Beach HighSchoolin 1988 and attended theUniversityof California, Riverside, where he earned a bachelor's degreeinpolitical science. It wasat UCR that he started drawing editorial cartoons for his school paper,TheHighlander.[ In 1991, Breen won theScripps Howard Charles M. Schulz Awardas the top collegecartoonist and theJohn Locher Memorial Awardfor Outstanding CollegeEditorial Cartoonist. He was influenced by cartoonists such asJeff MacNelly,Paul Conrad,Pat OliphantandDon Wright.Breen was about to become ahigh school history teacher when theAsbury Park Pressoffered him a job in the artdepartment in July 1994. He became the full-time editorial cartoonist there in1996.[ Breen's comic stripGrand Avenue, which is syndicated byUnited Feature Syndicateandappears in more than 150 newspapers across the country, was launched in 1999.In 2005, Breen's colleague Mike Thompson came on board to help write the strip,and in 2009 became official co-creator. In 2014 Thompson took over most writing& art dutiesas of 2016 the strip is entirely by Thompson. InJuly 2001, Breen returned to his home state to join the staff ofThe San DiegoUnion-Tribune. His editorial cartoons are nationally syndicatedbyCreators Syndicate(whichacquired former syndicateCopley News Servicein2008). They regularly appear inThe New York Times,USA Today,NewsweekandUS News and World Report.Breen is the author and illustrator of several children's books:Stick,Violetthe Pilot,The Secret of Santa's Island,[ andWoodpeckerWants a Waffle, for which he won the 2017 New Hampshire State LibraryLadybug Picture Book Award. Breen also created the cartoon Powerbirds forNBCUniversal-owned children's network, Universal Kids, based on his series ofchildren's books.
