For Sale: One Stanley Bailey No. 3, Type 9 Smooth Bottom Plane
This plane has a lite patina as well as some japanning deterioration common with a hand tool of it's age. There are no visible cracks or chips in the bed, but there are some scratches on the bottom and lite pitting at the rear of the bed, neither which affect its functionality. A 'T' trademark stamped cutting iron with good length and an edge sharpened to 8000 grit, easily cuts some nice thin shaving from the face of a slab of black walnut. Both irons are held in place with a "key-hole" lever cap, and the iron depth is adjusted with a 1" brass wheel. The Tote and Knob are rosewood pieces with a few slight battle scars, but neither are cracked and they match with a nice dark color. The lateral lever is pinned snug onto the frog and has a very visible single patent date stamped into it's surface.

Overall this plane is a nice example of the type 9 number 3 Bailey, in good shape for its approximate 120 year history, and still perfectly functions as intended.
