VINTAGE ETHIOPIAN AMHARA SHIELD

Available for purchase is a vintage Ethiopian Amhara shield. Amharas are an ethnic group traditionally inhabiting parts of the northern and central highlands of Ethiopia that formed the famous Abyssinian Empire going back 3000 years to biblical times of King Solomon and Queen Sheba. These Amhara shields were calledtafaorgasha, and were status symbols for Ethiopian warriors.In addition to being used as a defensive weapon in combat, they were also displayed as emblems of status or rank and used for ceremonial purposes. See the last photo in this listing for an image of an Ethiopian warrior holding a similar style shield (for illustrative purposes only, image not included).This particular shield is likely a mid-20th century piece created for ceremonial purposes. It has the typical conical shape and is made of steel covered with black velvet on the top side. The black cloth has shaved areas patterned to look like leaves, something I haven't see on other shields. The top side is richly adorned with engraved and hammered brass panels and strips.The inner face is covered with red cloth and set with a thick metal handle (also covered in cloth). The shield is approximately 15" in diameter and 5 1/2" tall. It was obtained from the estate of a U.S. Army veteran who was stationed in Ethiopia during the 1960s to assist with the Ethiopia-United States Mapping Mission.Condition of this Ethiopian shield is EXCELLENT. It's a little dirty, as found. The cloth on both sides appears to be in good shape with minor wear, mostly along the outer rim. The brass adornments have some age tarnishing. The cylindrical shield boss in the center is pushed in. Overall,this vintage shield looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
