The Great Depression Era Films, 2 DVD set

The Great Depression (also known in the U.K. as the Great Slump) was a dramatic, worldwide economic downturn beginning in some countries as early as 1928. The beginning of the Great Depression in the United States is associated with the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The depression had devastating effects in both the industrialized countries and those which exported raw materials. International trade declined sharply, as did personal incomes, tax revenues, prices and profits. Cities all around the world were hit hard, especially those dependent on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted in many countries. Farming and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by 40 to 60 percent. Mining and logging areas had perhaps the most striking blow because the demand fell sharply and there were few employment alternatives.

The Great Depression ended at different times in different countries; for subsequent history see Home front during World War II. The majority of countries set up relief programs, and most underwent some sort of political upheaval, pushing them to the left or right. Liberal democracy was weakened and on the defensive, as dictators such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini made major gains, which helped set the stage for World War II in 1939.

This 2 DVD set aims to capture a snapshot in time of this historic era. The aim of these DVD's is to educate, as well as entertain people, about a difficult period in American History. By watching these, you get a feel for what life was like back then. The total run time for the films in this collection is about 3 and a half hours. The core of this collection is the 10 part series by Ivan Besse about life in small town Britton, South Dakota. This 2 and a half hour silent documentary takes you there and makes you feel like you are almost living there. A great collection for the educator, the scholar, and historian alike. Each DVD has a fully interactive menu. A full list of films is as follows:

DVD 1 About Faces (1941)

This film, made by the Public Heath Service, laments the sad state of the nation's teeth and exhorts all audience members to see their dentists immediately. It was made on the eve of World War II, probably as a response to the large amounts of 4-Fs that were being given due to bad teeth. This film is a lot of fun and very stable. Priceless moments include the narrator ordering everybody in the audience to run his or her tongue over his or her teeth (and we get to see a movie audience actually doing this), and a poor toothless sap getting spurned by a pretty woman ("He doesn't even make it to first base," laments the narrator). Lots more fun than going to the dentist.

Financing the American Family (ca. 1935)

This film, made by the Household Finance Corporation in the early 30s, presents a middle class family that is struggling with debts. The answer for these people, amazingly enough, is supposed to be getting another loan. The bank turns them down, saying that they can't afford to deal with small borrowers. Just as they begin to sink into despair, they turn on the radio, which by an incredible coincidence is broadcasting a detailed infomercial about HFC. They go to HFC, and after they determine that they're good housekeepers and all-around nice people by giving them a home inspection, they promptly get the $300 loan they've been wanting, which was quite a chunk of change back in the early 30s. The wife asks what would happen if her husband died or they otherwise lost his income. The loan officer placates them by saying they wouldn't expect them to do the impossible and as long as they're paying what they can, it'll be ok (but he puts none of this in writing, so good luck if hubby really does kick the bucket). This film just screams early 30s in the way it was made, and its cheesily and charmingly earnest in its propositions, which probably seemed even more outrageous to Depression-era audiences, many of whom were wiped out because of borrowing, than to people today. The family depicted, though, doesn't seem to be very hard hit by the Depression, so maybe they were ripe for this kind of solution. I wouldn't laugh to hard at the film today, though, considering how debt-ridden most of us are.

All of our DVD's sold are formatted NTSC, without region coding. This means that they will play on any NTSC DVD Player in the world. The standard in USA is NTSC. For those in Europe, your DVD player may be a PAL format, which will not work. For those overseas customers, please verify that your DVD player can play NTSC disks.

Please note, that most of the films on our disks were made 40 years ago or more. Some perhaps as old as 80 or 90 years! As you can imagine, the movie making equipment of the time was a lot more primitive than the high tech equipment that they use today. Also, many of these films were stored improperly for decades before being digitally coded. As a result of this, these films are not what one would consider to be "DVD quality" today. Many, if not most, are black and white. The sound and picture quality is not perfect. There are those occasional "snap, crackle, and pops" across many of these films. We feel that these imperfections add to a film's charm, and provide for a more authentic viewing experience. WIth that in mind, this collection may not be for those wishing to find digitally remastered and professional recolored duplications of the original work in perfect DVD quality. Please keep that in mind prior to purchase, since we have fully disclosed that to you.

I live in country ABC, will your DVD work in my DVD player?

Short answer, probably. Long answer, it depends. There are two formats of DVD in the world. NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the standard for the US and I believe Japan, along with some other countries too. PAL is popular in Europe. If you have an NTSC DVD player (all USA customers), this disk will work for you. If you have a PAL player, this won't. Also, many commercial DVD's out there have region coding. Without getting in a long discussion on it, none of our DVD's have any region coding, so that won't be an issue. All you need to know is whether or not your DVD player is an NTSC format.

In an effort to keep our costs down, that are passed along as low prices to you, all of our disks are packaged and shipped in economic sleeves and mailers. All of our disks are labeled with a clean label and some graphics. The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you. We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk. We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item. We believe you purchase for content, and ours is the best, although we still believe you will be pleased with the presentation.

NON-USA CUSTOMERS: Same deal above, except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them. We've noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments. The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance. It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that. Your disk will arrive or we will replace it.
