• Only one print of this subject available on at this timeThe Aerotrain was a streamlined trainset introduced by GM
Electro-Motive Division in the mid-1950s. This train concept
was brought to life by GM’s Chuck Jordan, Chief Designer
of Special Projects. It had all the pizzaz of GM’s 1950’s auto-
mobile designs, utilized the experimental EMD LWT12
locomotive, coupled to a set of modified GM intercity high-
way bus bodies! Each car rode on two axles with an air
suspension system, intended to give a smooth ride, but
had the opposite effect. The Union Pacific tested the train-
sets after they demonstrated on the New York Central.
A UP Aerotrain ran between Los Angeles and Las Vegas
starting in 1956, as depicted in Andy’s dramatic painting.
Passengers were not happy with the noisy, bumpy ride,
so UP’s Aerotrains were sold in 1958. The Rock Island
RR then employed them in suburban commuter service.
