We are offering a RARE Circus Program for The Duttons Circus - not sure of exact date, believe it to be circa 1920s, possibly earlier. (4-panel, 2-sided program, when fully opened is 8 1/2" x 15")The circus, which was owned by Nellie Jordon Dutton, performed at Fairs, Parks & Exhibitions. Attractions included animals, acrobats, aerialists, gymnasts and clowns.
**NOTE** - we couldn't find a whole lot on The Dutton Circus, other than the Duttons appear to have been from Australia where they first appeared with their circus. There is a photograph of Nellie Dutton walking a tight rope on the emuseum.ringling.org website. Also, we found a San Francisco Chronicle 1931 article on circus "leapers", acrobats who from a springboard their bodies would fly, twisting, turning and somersaulting over the backs of lined up elephants. In this article they say the "leaping" act had not been done for 20 years but was coming back.In this article Nellie Jordon Dutton describes in detail the technicality and apparatus required to accomplish the leaping.**NOTE** - The article says that "the Dutton Circus will place the "leapers" as the featured act on their bill, and unquestionably other circuses will follow". It sounds like the Dutton Circus was the first to perform this act since it was done 20 years prior.
