Description:

VERY RARE museum quality big Platycerium like parasite fossi plantAphlebia sp.Preslgrowing in situ fromother plant and seed fern climber leaves ofMariopteris muricata( BRONGNIART ) ZEILLER 1886!

VERY interseting and rare fossil plants !Aphlebia Presl 1838- is still unknown and very mystery fossil plant, foundin paleobiological - paleoecological interaction withCarboniferous " true" spore ferns like Pecopteris.Aphlebiais normally connected along the mainaxis of the fern fronds and has a variety of irregular and pinnatifidleaves which display incomplete to poorly visible veins that aretypically parallel.

Recently group of scientists announced , that found on Aphlebiareproductive structures ( seed , spores ) preserved and documented in compression-impression material. These structures resemble sporangia which are typical of the Carboniferous ferns. These new records indicate that Late Carboniferous Aphlebia may have developed an autonomous !Aphlebia shapeless -irregular leaflets growing on the stem of some ferns . They occur mostly detached. To this day we don't know whyAphlebia grew on the paleozoic fernsstems.Maybe Aphlebia protect delicate, curled, juvenile fern leaves ( so-called Spiropteris) by insects or it was a parasitic plant - a fern like Platycerium or like mistletoe - that grow in treetops ?Nice big specimen of classic , coal age fossil plant - fossil fernMariopteris muricata( BRONGNIART ) ZEILLER 1886- climber vine, liana-like seed fern fossil frond

Mariopteris muricata( BRONGNIART ) ZEILLER 1886is a Mariopterids species. In this species the secondary pinnae are linear-lanceolate, alternate and oblique to the rachis. The pinnules are confluent at the base and subtriangular. The lateral veins straight, generally immrsed and hidden, once near the base, with the lower positioned ones often forking again.

Mariopteridaceaeseed ferns (Pteridosperms) group contains two genera, Marioptris and Karinopteris.Mariopterisis a form genus for relatively small compact fronds which are bifurcated twice.

The pinnules are tongue-shaped to assymmetrically triangular in outline with a distinct basal lobe (at least the pinnules closest to the main axes). Although it is clear that most mariopterids are seed ferns, their natural affinity remains unclear. Karinopterids obviously had a climbing growth habit. This species, like other Karinopteroids and Mariopteroids, had a vine- to liana-like growth habit and climbed with specialized climber hooks.
