This real photo postcard depicts a general store in Arcadia, Florida. There are two well-dressed men in suits manning the store, with products, items, and a barrel in the background.

My favorite things about this postcard is that you can read some of the items brand names. in the foreground, you can see a container labeled Nabiso. Near it are some boxes labeled Fig Newtons. Next to that is a box that says Diamond Match Co. There's also a container that says Cameo Biscuits.

The Diamond Match Company was the largest manufacturer of matches in the United States in the late nineteenth century. It's roots started in the early 1850s, Edward Tatnall of Wilmington, Delaware was given an English recipe for making matches by a business acquaintance, William R. Smith. In 1853, Tatnall attempted to turn the recipe into a business at Market Street Bridge over Brandywine Creek in Wilmington. The first matches ignited with the slightest friction, a problem Tatnall solved by reducing the phosphorus content by 25 percent.

The first Fig Newtons were baked at the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery in 1891. The product was named after the city of Newton, Massachusetts. Until the late 19th century, many physicians believed that most illnesses were related to digestion problems, and recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls were the ideal solution to this advice. They were a locally produced and handmade product, brought to the U.S. by British immigrants. That was until a Philadelphia baker and fig lover, Charles Roser, invented a process in 1891 which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. Cambridgeport, Massachusetts–based Kennedy Biscuit Company purchased the Roser recipe and started mass production.

Pearson & Sons Bakery opened in Massachusetts in 1792, and they made a biscuit called pilot bread for consumption on long sea voyages. In 1889, William H. Moore acquired "Pearson & Sons Bakery", "Josiah Bent Bakery", and six other bakeries to start the "New York Biscuit Company". Chicago lawyer Adolphus Green (1843–1917) started the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company (later Nabiso) in 1890 after acquiring 40 different bakeries. Then Moore, Green, and John Gottlieb Zeller (1849–1939, founder of Richmond Steam Bakery) all merged in 1898 to form the "National Biscuit Company", and Green was named president. Zeller was president of National Biscuit Company from 1923–1931.

For a collector who deals in signs and advertisements in the early 1900s, this is a must-have, as these brand names next to each other, and recognizable, is desirable.

Please inspect the pictures, as they give the best representation of condition. May have discoloring, edge or corner wear, marks, creases, fading, smudges, corner or edge bends, tears, or corners missing.
