This is a recreation of the Glossopetrae, or “Tongue Stone” pendants worn by Renaissance-era nobility. Centuries ago, people believed fossil shark teeth were the petrified tongues of dragons. They would wear these as amulets to guard against poison. Holding one against a snake bite or placing it in a cup of wine was thought to neutralize any toxin.

This particular tooth is from the extinct shark Serratolamna. Because it is an original fossil rather than a replica, the shape and color may vary slightly but should be between ¾” (19mm) and 1” (25.4mm). Please message me if you have any questions. The tooth is attached to a rustic leather necklace by a wire loop. The necklace itself is 2 ½ feet long so you can customize the length.

Serratolamna was a smaller genus of shark that first appeared during the Late Cretaceous and saw the extinction of the dinosaurs, surviving until the Paleogene Period. These sharks had fairly symmetrical teeth in the front of their mouths and sharply curved teeth towards the back. Each tooth had one to five tiny secondary points, or cusplets, and were used for tearing chunks of meat out of larger prey.
