Padova, ITALY - Church of the Eremitani - Montegna Chapel - Bas-relief Pisano: The Church of the Eremitani (Italian: Chiesa degli Eremitani), or Church of the Hermits, is an Augustinian church of the 13th century in Padua, northern Italy. The Ovetari Chapel (Italian: Cappella Ovetari) is a chapel in the right arm of the Church of the Eremitani in Padua. It is renowned for a Renaissance fresco cycle by Andrea Mantegna and others, painted from 1448 to 1457. The cycle was destroyed by an Allied bombing in 1944: today, only two scenes and a few fragments survive, which have been restored in 2006. They are, however, known from black-and-white photographs. Giovanni Pisano ( Pisa , about 1248 - Siena , about 1315 ) was an Italian sculptor and architect . He succeeded in developing the ideas of his father Nicola , confirming the pre-eminent role of sculpture among the figurative arts of the XIII century, at least until the rise of Giotto . He gave his statues slender and elegantly arched shapes, to the reliefs a strong sense of movement and chiaroscuro , expressing a strong expressiveness, without ever forgetting a solid typically Italian volume. He was the protagonist of some of the most important construction sites of his time, especially in Pisa and Siena , becoming one of the most influential artists of the fourteenth century. This Divided Back Era (1907-15) postcard is in good condition.
