Here we have an original vintage Hailwood & Ackroyd Improved Lamp, Type 01 SA, Made in Morley Leeds England. The is a makers plaque which reads HAILWOOD & ACKROYD LTD MAKERS HAILWOODS IMPROVED LAMP No TYPE 01 SA MORLEY LEEDS ENGLAND,. It is also stamped to base BRITISH MADE and 119. These lamps wereused by miners and shaft sinkers.
According to Graces Guide 'Hailwood and Ackroyd of Beacon Works, Morley, near Leeds, Yorkshire. 1897 Company founded.The company traded asAckroyd and Bestuntil 1927, also at the Beacon Works. They were well known as one of the UK's leading makers of miners' flame safety lamps and less well know as the makers of miners' caroffere type lamps.1927 The company re-formed asHailwood and Ackroyd. This is the Type 01 SA improved and was produced from 1927, the 01 was the first of the new improved lamps produced under the companies new name of Hailwood & Ackroyd.
The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are : 3 1/4 " / 8cm diameteracross base x 11 " / 28 cm excluding hook.
It is made from from turned brass and nickel plated steel to protect it from corrosion.
This lamp is a good original condition. Minor marks commensuratewith age and use and some wear to the nickelplating.The bottom screws off probably to replace the wick, however I was unable to remove it.
