NASA’s Plant Habitat-04 (PH-04) experiment cultivated chile peppers aboard the International Space Station for the first time. The peppers grew for more than three months when astronauts performed the first of two harvests. A second harvest occurred on Nov. 26, 2021. The crew ate all the peppers from the first harvest. For the second harvest, they ate some of the harvest and packaged 12 peppers for later return to Earth for analysis. This plant experiment is one of the most complex to date on station because of the long germination and growing times. PH-04 is the longest – and perhaps the spiciest – plant experiment to date on the space station. The study will add to NASA’s knowledge of growing food crops for long-duration space missions.
