During the Saturn V Rocket launches, the Apollo launch control team at the Kennedy Space Center referenced the countdown indicator clock that this artifact came from, as one of the 8 digital readout segments.This countdown clock segment was designed to display decimal readouts on the countdown indicator clocks that were used in the KSC, Launch Control Rooms. Apollocountdown clocks are iconic symbols for humanity's collective excitement, suspense, awe, and inspiration felt across our planet during the countdown to zero for the historic Apollo Moonshots.
KSC,Launch Control, July 16, 1969: "Apollo 11, this is launch operations manager. The launch team wishes you good luck and godspeed... We continue to build up pressure in all three stages here at the last minute to prepare for lift-off. T-minus one minute 35 seconds on the Apollo Mission flight to land first men on the Moon. All indications coming into the control center at this time indicate we are go. 1 minute 25 seconds and counting, our status board indicates the 3rd stage completely pressurized. We're approaching the 60-second mark on the Apollo 11 mission. T-minus 60 seconds and counting... Neil Armstrong just reported 'it's been a real smooth countdown'. We passed the 50-second mark, power transfer is complete. We're on internal power with the launch vehicle at this time. 35 seconds and counting. We are still go with Apollo 11... 30 seconds and counting. Astronauts report 'It feels good'. T-minus 25 seconds... T-minus 15 seconds, guidance is internal... 10, 9, ignition sequence start,... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, all engines running. Lift off! This artifact was originally part of the Charles H. Bell, world-class, spaceflight hardware collection. As a NASA Apollo engineer, Charles acquired the Kennedy Space Center countdown clock when he was commissioned to update the Saturn V Launch Control Room for the KSC, Visitor Center and Museum.These countdown clock segments are made from a black anodized aluminum alloy. Approximate segment dimensions: 4.25 inches x 1.75 inches x 1 inch.
Everything included in this sale is shown in the first eleven listing photos. The last eight photos are for reference only, including a photo showing how the segments connect on a countdown clock from private collection with all of the segments attached (this clock is not included in this sale), and the remaining reference photos are NASA photos (photo credits: NASA), showing similar countdown indicator clocks in use during the Apollo Missions at the KSC Launch Control Center with photos specifically showing Firing Room 1 during the historic Apollo 11 countdown and launch to the Moon.
