Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, known for their collection of Japanese folk art books, have long been inspired by Japanese crafts. Through the East Japan Project, they collaborated with Tohoku kokeshi artisans to create a new concept for the traditional kokeshi doll, which has been made using almost unchanged techniques and forms for over a century.

The kokeshi, cherished in Japan for generations, typically stands as a static, painted figurine. However, the Bouroullec brothers introduced a single joint to the kokeshi, imparting movement and bringing the doll to life. This innovation allows the kokeshi to bow, embodying the familiar Japanese gesture of greeting.
