Historic Railroad Negative - (era\' 1899) Roundhouse steam #2 Salida CO railyard:
$1250.00

Roundhouse VTG. Photo Negative #2I am finally offering for sale my historicSalida Colorado railyard negatives. This is a vintage 4\"x5\" inch Film Negative; Denver & Rio Grande railroad workers pose on engine 218 at the turntable of the roundhouse and shops. The most detailed shots of the D&RG Roundhouse, shops, and various outbuildings; multiple engines are visible in this image.
See my other sales as I am offering both of the mostastonishing roundhouse negatives ever taken, all boilers stoked. Very rare negatives. A third negative of the Switch engines, all three will be listed. See notes below for history and photographer.
NOTE:From a private collection. I have had these in proper storage for about twenty years, they were very old when I purchased them from a private collector. See film notch notes below..
The state of Colorado owns one copy set but it appears it is damaged, so their set was likely taken off the original plates at a later date. One other set is known to exist in private hands. This is probably the only time this historic set will ever be up for sale, as the state of Colorado will not sell their set. No touch ups have been done to the negative scan.*See my other listings, both of the historic roundhouse negatives from Salida railyard are listed.
**Perfect for the person who wants to get these properly drum scanned and do a limited print run of 2k prints for perhaps $200 a set. I have all three of these vintage Salida railway negatives up for sale now, ton of money could be made on these. This vintage collection was long ago taken from glass negatives found in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin by Newell Meigs, who lived in Salida, but was originally from Beaver Dam.Film notches. I am not an expert but my research shows:
cellulose nitrate NOEastman Safety Kodak Commercial 6127, 4127orEktapan 4162 Ektapan (Estar Thick Base) (1960\'s)
TEST SCAN:The test scan as shown was done on my 15 year old flatbed, all I had. No film holders for 4\"x5\"; so scanned right on the glass. My old scanner does not have great Dmax ratings. But it resolved pretty good as can be seen by the extreme zoom into the sand, steel rivets etc.A proper scan would be a wet-scan on a drum or a much newer scanner.
Vintage aprox. 4\"x5\" inch Negative The Watermark(Scanned for ) Is not on the original Image. It is applied to protect the image for the buyer. Will be shipped boxed to assure safe transit.
Google says:For a time, Newell and a partner ran a successful lunch counter. Newell later opened a stationery store and in 1904, he and his partner J.W. Barber opened a photograph studio, which he retired from the following year. The Salida Mail reported August 9, 1904:
“Meigs and Barber certainly have a fine studio. The old Skinner Gallery has been completely remodeled, a large room having been added to the rear and a new sky light placed in the south side, while the interior has been painted and repapered. New and attractive pictures adorn the walls. The work is just completed and the new firm is now ready for business.”
Denver & Rio Grande Roundhouse ca. 1900 photographed by Newell Meigs.
Newell Meigs moved to Salida in 1896 and opened the Corner Lunch Room at the F Street Bridge. In 1898, he bought the Smith Bros. book and stationery store; he dabbled in photography as a hobby but some of his images are the clearest ever recorded of Salida. The image above of the Denver & Rio Grande Roundhouse and Shops was taken by Meigs about 1900. The roundhouse had suffered a devastating fire in 1892 and the doors at that time were straight rectangles. After reconstruction, the engine doors were built with arches, as shown above. Newell would have set up a portable darkroom in order to fix the image to a glass negative.........
Meigs was born in 1864 and died in 1932 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He moved to Salida, Colorado in 1886 after buying out the express business of W.H. Freeman and J. Wood. He later ran \'The People\'s Store\', a books and stationery store. By 1904, Meigs had his own photo gallery and he took many photographs of the Salida area. Meigs was also active in Salida city politics.(keywords railroad, railway, train, steam engines, locomotives, historic roundhouse)
