Fort Gibson, Indian Territory was the largest US Army post on the Western frontier in the 1840s, providing protection for the Creek, Cherokee, Seminole and others of the so-called "Civilized Tribes" of the Territory and fighting outlaw bands and Comanche raiders from Texas. An Original US Army Receipt for Camp and Garrison Equipment the 6th US Infantry at Fort Gibson including great coats, wall tents, 2 Regimental Flags, wool jackets shoulder straps, etc, showing part of the supplies had been forwarded to the troops at Vera Cruz, Mexico, Sept 30, 1847 by Military Storekeeper Thomas Grosvener King. 1p 8 x 11" ink on blue paper. Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. Historic Fort Gibson is located in Muscogee County, Oklahoma.This is the earliest Fort Gibson item I have had. The 6th Infantry was was part of General Scott's Army during the Mexican War 1846-47 and took part in the Battles of Chapultepec and Vera Cruz.
