VINTAGE 1950’S POLITICAL MOLA FROM THE KUNA INDIAN CULTURE - PANAMA

Dimensions are 19” x 15

This is a Political Mola.
The central oval says partido republicano ( Republican Party). In each top corner are embroidered bird men with shirt pockets. In each lower corner is PPN (Partido Progresista Nacional, PPN) was a Panamanian conservative nationalist, personalistic political party) created in 1959. But the dominant, central figure is a bull, the symbol of the CPN party (The National Patriotic Coalition (in Spanish: Coalición Patriótica Nacional, CPN) created in 1952.

Sometimes letters on molas may appear backward as some Guna artisans were illiterate at this time and the primary purpose of the letters is as a design element.

Gunas people participate in Panamanian elections, and campaign materials can inspire molas. They may depict one or more candidates, political party symbols, or satirical commentaries

A great mola for someone that follows the history of Panama or politics in general.
