Offered here is a lovely piece of 1879 American advertising ephemera. The card is advertising Ocean Excursions to Rockaway Beach aboard \"White\'sMagnificent Steamers\" (additionally described as \"new palatial Steamers\"). The card shows one of the steamers in the background while the crowds play in the surf and a pair of young women change into bathing costumes in the changing room.
Also of interest, along the top of the front of the card is stamped in red: \"McClurg\'s Band Excursion to Coney Island and Rockaway, Sunday, August 14th, 1879\". Sounds like fun!
As best I can tell through some online research, McClurg\'s Band was a flute and drum band and probably based either in New Jersey (? Trenton) or somewhere in Pennsylvania.
The dimensions of the card are 3 1/4 inches in height by 5 3/8 inches in width.
